Infratemporal Region and Temporomandibular Joint

by Anaz Izam Shah

1)      Lateral pterygoid plate is a boundary of infratemporal fossa laterally.
2)      The inferior surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid is a boundary of infratemporal fossa superiorly.
3)      Pterygoid venous plexus are the one of the contents of infratemporal fossa.
4)      Chorda tympani also are the one of the contents of infratemporal fossa.
5)      There is no otic ganglion in infratemporal fossa.
6)      Lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate is the origin of superior head of lateral pterygoid muscle.
7)      Lateral pterygoid muscle inserts at articular disc.
8)      The main function of lateral pterygoid muscle is depressor and protractor of mandible.
9)      Hypoglossal nerve supplies the lateral pterygoid muscle.
10)   Relations of lateral pterygoid muscle are temporalis and masseter muscles superficially.
11)   Relations of lateral pterygoid muscle are deep temporal nerve and masseteric nerve at the lower border.
12)   Pterygoid artery is the branches of third part of maxillary artery.
13)   Anterior tympanic artery is the branches of first part of maxillary artery.
14)   Infraorbital artery is the branches of second part of maxillary artery.
15)   Pterygoid plexus of veins situated around the medial pterygoid muscle.
16)   Nerve to medial pterygoid muscle is the branches of mandibular nerve from posterior division of trunk.
17)   Otic ganglion is a peripheral parasympathetic ganglion which supply secretomotor fibres to parotid gland.
18)   The chorda tympani nerve is connected to otic ganglion.
19)   Regarding of temporomandibular joint, articular surface covered by hyaline cartilage instead of fibrocartilage.
20)   Articular disc is attached to the tubercles of the head of the mandible.
21)   The mandibular condyle is convex in all directions but wider latero-medially.
22)   Articular disc helps to accommodate a hinging action as well as the gliding actions.
23)   Fibrous capsule is attached to the articular tubercle anteriorly.
24)   Stylomandibular ligament is attached to styloid process to the angle of the mandible.
25)   Temporomandibular joint is supplied by superficial temporal artery and masseteric nerve.
