Ankle Joint

by Muhammad Al-Aiman.

1.       Properties of ankle joint
1.
Is a hinge joint

2.
Trochlear surface of talus articulates with medial malleolus of tibia

3.
Comma-shaped articular surface of medial side of talus articulates with lower end of tibia

4.
Inferior transverse tibio-fibular ligament forms posterior aspect of tibio-fibular mortice

5.
Has three main type of ligaments

2.       Deltoid ligament
1.
Is the smallest ligament

2.
Prevents eversion of the ankle

3.
Is circular in shape

4.
Has superficial and deep layers

5.
It binds medial malleolus to tarsal bone

3.       Ankle joint :
1.
Is supply by anterior tibial artery only

2.
Is supply by deep peroneal nerve and tibial nerve

3.
Dorsiflexion - by muscles of posterior compartment of the leg.

4.
Plantar flexion – by muscles supplied by tibial nerve

5.
Extensor digitorum longus involve in dorsiflexion

4.       Ankle joint :
1.
Is most stable in dorsiflexion

2.
Sprained ankle is frequently occurs at the anterior talofibular ligament

3.
Severity of sprains is graded from 1-4

4.
Stretching of Achilles tendon will prevent sprains

5.
Sprains- cause injury to the medial ligaments

5.       At medial ankle, there are:
1.
Flexor digitorum longus

2.
Posterior tibial artery

3.
Calcanofibular ligaments

4.
Inferior fibular retinaculum

5.
Extensor digitorum brevis
